American Shad Now in Florida's St. Johns River

The American Shad run in Florida's St. Johns River will peak in the next few weeks. Now is the time to make time to go fish for them. By about April 1 the bulk of the run will be over.

Fly fisher Bill Mieli of New Smyrna Beach, who caught nine of the scrappy fighters on Tuesday, said, "You need to be down near the bottom to have consistent success. I use a number three sink-tip line with a tandem fly rig. Flies should be small and short, since the fish tend to nip at them."

Spinning tackle will also work. Small jigs like crappie jigs, shad darts, and tiny spoons will all take fish.

Florida's St. Johns River is the southernmost river on the east coast that supports a run of shad. The fish migrate all the way from the Bay of Fundy to reach it.

Capt. John Kumiski of Spotted Tail Charter Service says, "Shad fishing is a pleasant way to spend a winter afternoon. The fishing is relaxed and unhurried. You might also catch bluegills, crappie, and the occasional black bass. The river supports incredible bird life. Best of all, some of the best fishing can be reached on foot."
