About Capt. John Kumiski

Fishing is in my blood. Blame it on my father.

I grew up in Massachusetts, got a degree from the University of Massachusetts and got married in 1980. I fished a lot in New England, mostly in freshwater, a lot of it while wading or from canoes. There is excellent fishing there.

My first job after graduation was a teaching position at an American school in Brazil. I spent four years in South America, and fished in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Peru. There's excellent fishing there, too.

I've been in central Florida since 1984. I love it here. I taught in the Seminole County school system for ten and a half years. I started writing and guiding part time, then quit my teaching job in 1995 and started guiding and writing full time. I've written five books and had hundreds of articles and photos published. I've received many awards for my work.

I've been tying flies since I was a child and have been fly fishing since about age 12. I have caught fish in 15 states and 10 countries. My life list on fly currently contains 63 species, and I continue to work on it.

I teach fishing classes at Brevard Community College, and am the instructor at the Andy Thornall Fly Fishing for Redfish School. The FFF has certified me as a Fly Casting Instructor.

I am proud to be a member of the Coastal Conservation Association, the Federation of Fly Fishers, the Indian River Guides Association, the Florida Outdoor Writers Association, and the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association. I have been a two term president of the Indian River Guides Association, a two term president of the Backcountry Fly Fishing Association, and a one term vice president of the Florida Outdoor Writers Association. I organize an annual fishing day for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Florida. I have been selected as a Top Rated Guide.

Nine boats of various types call my yard home. Two teenaged boys, two cats, and a wife call my house home. Some of the things we enjoy together besides fishing and its related activities include mountain biking, paddling, hiking, and reading.

If you have questions or comments please email me, or call any time. This site has a lot of information, and various fishing books, maps, and videos for sale. Thank you for your visit!

In spite of its ups and downs, life truly is great. And you can imagine that after 14 years in a classroom I really, REALLY love my work! Taking people fishing is the greatest! Come join me for a day or three!

Capt. John about to release a silver king.
