An Open Letter to NASADear Sirs:I am shocked and disheartened to learn that NASA is considering the construction of a commercial launch pad on the western shore of the Mosquito Lagoon that would close off the entire southern part of the lagoon and the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge. Ironically, this comes at a time when the area is already too popular with an ever-growing population of recreational fishermen, kayakers, birders, and other nature enthusiasts who use this area - one of the few wild areas left in Florida. To significantly shrink an area already heavily and regularly used by residents and tourists alike would place more pressure on the resources of the remaining area. Negative environmental impact and reduced "quality of experience" would no doubt result. I hope NASA will reconsider this ill-conceived plan. The Mosquito Lagoon-Indian River estuary needs more, not less, area set aside for public recreation and education. John Kumiski |
