Fishing From the Skiff

My motor skiff, called Spotted Tail, is a 2008 Mitzi 17, powered by a Yamaha 60 outboard. The skiff runs shallow, is practically silent, and could hardly be better designed for the fishing I do. It will accommodate a maximum of three anglers in addition to me.

Fishing Inshore

In the Indian River Lagoon system I launch at various boat ramps, depending on where fishing has been best lately. Generally we'll fish the Mosquito Lagoon or the Indian River Lagoon, and sometimes in the Banana River Lagoon. We generally sight fish in two feet of water or less. Targeted fish species are usually redfish and seatrout, but we also fish for snook, tarpon, crevalle jacks, and others as encountered.

Few experiences in angling compare to seeing a fish, casting to it, and watching it track down and take your offering. Since sight fishing requires the angler to see the fish, a good pair of polarized sunglasses and a hat are very important items of equipment. In order for sight fishing to work, good weather is important. What if the weather is less than optimum?

When necessary we'll blind cast, or even still fish with bait (my own least favorite way to fish). Everyone defines success a little differently, so let me know what you want to do. It was mentioned earlier that I look at guiding as a service business, and my job is to meet your need to have a successful day. My guarantee is that I will do my best to meet your needs.

This school of big redfish ought to raise your blood pressure a little.

Fishing Near Shore

I'll run Spotted Tail out of Port Canaveral and Ponce Inlet. The sea conditions must be nearly perfect for me to do this. Target species include tripletail, cobia, tarpon, snook, redfish, Spanish and king mackerel, jack crevalle, blacktip sharks, and little tunny. Other species may be encountered.

I still prefer to sight fish while doing this, but of course that's not always possible. I also fish structure, any flotsam we can find, weed lines, that kind of thing. Slow trolling happens sometimes. Some days it's great, some days it ain't.

If you tend towards seasickness this trip is not recommended.
